Urbnsurf Melbourne

Image
Source: Urbnsurf This summer, Urbnsurf is set to open Australia's first full-sized surf park in Melbourne! This is not only exciting for local surfers, but the whole park will be solar-powered! Solar panels throughout the park will offset its power use, and Urbnsurf is looking for a renewable energy provider to secure long-term supply. For more information on Urbnsurf Melbourne, see their website and article at PV Magazine Australia ; and for more on renewable energy, follow me on Instagram !

The Gannawarra Energy Storage System

Image
The Gannawarra Energy Storage System is Australia’s largest combined battery and solar farm and among the largest of its kind in the world! It’s capable of producing enough electricity to power 16,000 households for 2 hours during peak demand – using 100% renewable energy. Great to see the integration of stored renewable energy with the Victorian grid! For more on solar power and renewable energy, follow me on Instagram !

How Does Solar Work?

My latest SlideShare outlines the process of converting sunlight into energy (and household savings!). Check it out!

Scale of the Solar Opportunity

Image
There's enough solar energy hitting the Earth every hour to meet all of humanity's power needs for an entire year! Every ounce of oil, every lump of coal, and every cubic foot of natural gas could be left in the ground if only we could capture one hour's worth of solar energy each year. That's the scale of the opportunity! To put that into a different perspective, if we covered the Mojave Desert with solar arrays, it would generate more than twice as much electricity as the U.S. uses annually. Solar-Powered Smart Bins

Image
I just read up on the new trial of solar-powered smart bins at Shelley Beach. It is part of a broader initiative to integrate innovative technology and smart infrastructure to improve sustainability along the coast of New South Wales. The energy generated compacts the waste inside the bins, reducing emissions through fewer garbage collections. What a great initiative! Read up more on the bins here .

Solar is Cheaper than Fossil Fuels

Image
Solar energy is no longer seen as an expensive energy option, but a cost-effective source of clean energy that can save people money. It wasn’t long ago that it seemed like a fantasy for the cost of solar energy to be cheaper than fossil fuels.  Since 2018 battery storage costs have fallen by more than a third since and solar PV by 18%. With falling prices, Solar PV is winning the race to become the cheapest source of energy in most countries. New innovations, economies of scale and manufacturing experience show a bright future ahead for renewable energy. For more on renewable energy, follow me on Instagram !

More than 2 million Australian households now have solar!

Image
Over 2 million households in Australia now have solar - is it just a trend? It's no surprise that homeowners are switching to an economic and renewable source of energy - the prevalence of blackouts and high energy bills have made more people think about alternatives to the national grid. Being a renewable source of energy and one that homeowners can adopt easily makes solar the obvious alternative. It isn't just a trend - it's now becoming the natural progression for when you own your home. We're more conscious of our energy usage and our impact on the environment. It's amazing to see so many households committed to offsetting their energy usage by relying on the power of the sun 🌅 Check out my recent SlideShare for more information on solar power usage in Australia, and follow me on Instagram for more on solar and renewable energy.

How Much Solar Do I Need?

Image
I’m so glad to see that you are considering a switch to solar power! In order to make an informed decision about your switch then there are a few points that must be considered. Firstly, you will need to decide on your budget, your savings expectation and figure out what your current electricity usage is. After working this out you will need to determine the right system to fit your needs and decide on the number of panels you would like to install. Understanding Your Current Electricity Use The best way to figure out your electricity usage is to look at your recent electricity bills. You can then identify your daily average usage. The bill should say the daily average use in kWh (kilowatt hours) or units. If there is no daily average on the bill, then you can simply divide the monthly, quarterly or annual average by the respective days to reveal the daily average figure. Typically, most Australian homes use 15-20kWh per day, but this figure can vary considerably depending...
